About

New/Dance/Music (NDM) is a unique marriage between the worlds of Classical-based New Music and Electronic Dance Music. Acoustic instruments including to date, flute, live percussion and cello are paired with driving electronic rhythms. Recently there have been several successful attempts to blend these two cultures, but where these other projects have focused mainly on orchestral-renditions of techno-classics, or sprinkling dashes of musicianship on top of a pre-programmed beats, the works developed for New/Dance/Music are developed by pairing New Music composers with producers and rhythm-creators from the international DJ scene and renown instrumentalists.

New/Dance/Music #1 paired the DJ and producer The Scumfrog. the composer Marcos Balter and flutist Claire Chase. The work premiered at Burning Man 2017 on the Robot Heart bus for their infamous “sunrise set”.  As the sun cracked the horizon, the sounds of flutist Claire Chase were broadcast from one of best mobile sounds systems in the world, to several thousand listeners and set the tone for the 90 minutes that follow.

Later, in the year, New/Dance/Music #1 was performed live on the roof of Output in Brooklyn where it was followed by New/Dance/Music #2 (with Kronos Quartet Cellist, Jeffrey Zeigler), and New/Dance/Music #3 (with Sandbox percussion Quartet).
